The Big 4-0. That’s a significant milestone. With American life expectancy at 78, I am officially middle aged. Wow. But I feel great. I am more confident in my choices and in my (many years postpartum) body. My husband and I are reconnecting in ways we haven’t since before children. And with two busy tweens, I’ve got to stay healthy enough to be on the move. I can’t let changes in my body stand in the way of getting stuff done, so I quickly adapted to the things that have become my new daily normal since turning 40.

Good news? I can help that new normal with digestive health products available at Sam’s Club. Look in the Sam’s Club Instant Savings Book for $5 off each featured product, up to $15 off if you buy all three (Benefiber® Prebiotic Fiber Supplement, Culturelle® Digestive Health Probiotic, and Nexium® 24HR Acid Reducer Capsules). The offer runs 8/23-9/17/17.

Turning 40: Managing Blood Pressure

The silent killer. That’s how heart disease is commonly known, especially for women. About a month after my husband’s grandfather passed, I scheduled an appointment to donate blood. I was denied because my blood pressure was too high. My blood pressure was too high to save lives. That was a true wake up call.

After visiting my primary care physician, a holistic specialist, and a cardiologist, I chose to swallow my pride and a low dose diuretic to control my blood pressure daily. I’ve also learned to spot a bathroom from 100 feet, because diuretic.

I have experienced digestive health issues in the past. Enter the world of occasional digestive issues and frequent heartburn.

Burping is NOT SEXY. It’s hard to feel good about dinner date night when the thought of food makes you feel gassy, so I swing by my local Sam’s Club to pick up Culturelle® Digestive Health Probiotic* and Nexium® 24HR Acid Reducer Capsules. I pick up the saving books, grab my items, and don’t even think about stopping for a hot dog.

Another challenge I face is frequent heartburn. Frequent like every day, every meal frequent. Just one Nexium® 24HR Acid Reducer Capsule a day gives you protection from frequent heartburn all day and all night long.*** I don’t have time to be sidelined with the pain and discomfort of frequent heartburn when I am on the sideline with Alexandra. Nexium® 24HR Acid Reducer Capsules are the #1 choice of Doctors and Pharmacists for their own frequent heartburn.****

***Use as directed. May take 1 to 4 days for full effect.
****Among PCP’s and Pharmacists who use a branded OTC PPI.

Turning 40: Food Allergies

As if digestion problems aren’t bad enough, my food allergies are much more sensitive now. I can no longer eat in Italian restaurants (tomato allergy) or steak houses (shellfish allergy), and banquets are always touch and go. Many times, even the smell of my allergens is enough to spark a reaction. I’ve started taking a daily antihistamine to prevent the onset of a reaction.
This luncheon almost killed me. Shrimp in a tomato sauce?!? Sigh.

It’s much too stressful trying to find places that we can eat out as a family. On the bright side, I cook much more at home and have developed some awesome quick and easy recipes that I know are allergen free.

Turning 40: Eyeglasses

For as long as I have lived, I have been the only person in my immediate family who didn’t wear glasses. That time has ended. But my glasses are cute though, right?

Turning 40: Muscle Aches

This is 40. And 40 is not 20. Activities that used to be physically easy for me are sometimes pretty tough. I must work to maintain my flexibility and soreness doesn’t recover nearly as quickly. During sports seasons I carry a first aid kit…and have had to use it. I tweaked my arm carrying too much stuff to one of Alexandra’s track meets. It reminded me that I must treat my 40-year-old body with delicacy and care.

How has your life changed since you turned 40? What changes are you looking forward to in turning 40? Which ones are you not?
